gut feeling

Gut Feeling is a concrete replica of the artist's torso—from hips to chest—bound to a square concrete pedestal. The torso appears restrained by rope, though the rope itself is absent; only its traces remain, pressed into the surface of the body.
The work reflects on the contemporary psychological residue of the corset. While corsets are no longer commonly worn, the beauty norms they once enforced persist beneath the surface. By foregrounding the marks of restraint rather than the restraining tool itself, Gut Feeling visualizes how control becomes internalized.
The sculpture was commissioned by Room on the Roof, the artist-in-residence program of the Dutch department store de Bijenkorf, for the traveling window exhibition In de maak ("In the Making"). The exhibition marked the institution's 150th anniversary and toured all seven de Bijenkorf locations across the Netherlands. The work was featured in the themed window titled Volmaakt ("Perfection"), which explored the history of beauty ideals and bodily distortion in relation to fashion.
