In Bend or Break, Romy Yedidia uses wax’s malleability as a metaphor for the pressure she has felt to conform to shifting beauty standards. With each passing decade—or sometimes just a few years—new ideals emerge, demanding adaptation and self-alteration. The artist casts impressions of her own skin into thin sheets of wax, folding them to fit the rigid proportions of a smooth, white plaster pedestal. The forms are cinched in place with an industrial tension belt, creating a visceral clash between the organic and the manufactured—materials not meant to coexist, yet forcibly bound together.
